As leaders, we often face external challenges in our pursuit of success. But what if the biggest obstacle to our growth isn’t external at all? What if it’s the voice inside our own heads?
Welcome to the world of emotional saboteurs — those internal thought patterns that undermine our success and increase our mental load. Today, we’ll explore how to identify these saboteurs and leverage neuroscience-based techniques to overcome them, paving the way for sustainable high performance and improved work-life integration.
Recognizing Your Saboteurs
Emotional saboteurs are automatic patterns in our minds that influence how we think, feel, and respond. They’re the voice of self-doubt, the impulse to micromanage, or the tendency to avoid difficult conversations. These saboteurs cause stress, anxiety, and frustration, ultimately hindering our performance and wellbeing.
To identify your saboteurs, start by paying attention to your thought patterns during challenging situations. Are you constantly second-guessing yourself? Do you tend to catastrophize minor setbacks? These could be signs of saboteurs at work.
Shirzad Chamine, in his work on Positive Intelligence®, identifies 10 common types of saboteurs. Understanding these can help you recognize which ones might be most active in your own thought patterns.

Here are brief descriptions of each saboteur:
- The Judge: Constantly finds faults in yourself, others, and circumstances.
- The Hyper-Achiever: Driven by a constant need to achieve and impress others.
- The Controller: Feels an intense need to control situations and people around them.
- The Stickler: Seeks perfection and has difficulty tolerating mistakes or imperfections.
- The Pleaser: Tries to gain acceptance and approval by helping or flattering others.
- The Hyper-Vigilant: Feels constantly anxious about potential dangers or things going wrong.
- The Restless: Seeks constant activity and stimulation, often struggling to stay focused.
- The Victim: Focuses on negative emotions and feelings of being burdened or misunderstood.
- The Avoider: Focuses excessively on the positive while avoiding necessary confrontation with negative realities.
- The Hyper-Rational: Overly reliant on logic, dismissing the importance of emotions.
Recognizing these saboteurs in action is the first step towards overcoming them. Which ones do you find most active in your own thought patterns?
To gain a more precise understanding of your personal saboteur patterns, I recommend taking the Saboteur Assessment. This tool helps you identify your primary saboteurs – the main accomplices to your Judge saboteur. By pinpointing these specific mental patterns, you’ll be better equipped to recognize and counteract them in your daily life.
The Neuroscience of Saboteurs
Understanding the brain science behind these self-limiting beliefs can be a game-changer. Our saboteurs are often rooted in the brain’s protective mechanisms — evolutionary traits that once kept us safe but now hold us back in modern professional environments.
By leveraging neuroplasticity — our brain’s ability to form new neural connections — we can rewire these protective circuits. This intentional rewiring allows us to shift from reflexive, fear-based responses to thoughtful, growth-oriented actions.
Overcoming Saboteurs with Mental Fitness
Developing mental fitness is key to conquering your saboteurs. Just as we build physical strength through consistent exercise, we can strengthen our psychological core through daily mental fitness practices.
One effective technique is the “Perspective-Taking” exercise. When faced with a challenging situation, pause and consider multiple perspectives. This not only interrupts the saboteur’s negative narrative but also activates your “Sage” mode — characterized by empathy, creativity, and curiosity.
To build this mental fitness consistently, I recommend practicing PQ reps. These are brief mindfulness exercises designed to shift your brain from saboteur-influenced thinking to a more positive, sage-like state. The PQ app is an excellent tool for guiding you through these exercises and tracking your progress. By dedicating just a few minutes each day to PQ reps, you can significantly improve your ability to recognize and counteract saboteur patterns.
Remember, overcoming saboteurs isn’t about fighting against your brain, but rather working in harmony with its incredible capacity for change. By understanding and applying these neuroscience principles, and consistently practicing mental fitness exercises like PQ reps, we can transform our protective mechanisms into catalysts for growth, peak performance, and fulfillment.
Now that you understand the power of recognizing and overcoming your saboteurs, you might be wondering how to apply these insights to your unique situation and leadership challenges.
