I was putting away clean laundry when it hit me that I’d been telling myself a story that wasn’t true (and it was holding me back). How could I rewrite the story and move toward my dreams?
My Limiting Beliefs
So, here’s the story. For years, I’ve told people I work better with words than images. That my right brain visual skills are lacking. Others choose beautiful or funny images to respond to emails or post on social media. Me, I’m working the words. I told enough people the story that it became the one I truly believed.
I let the story prevent me from being on Instagram. Pretty silly, right? I told myself Instagram was really different from the other online platforms and that it required visual skills I didn’t have. But, I also believed it was something I needed to do to reach more busy moms looking for energy to live their purpose while raising a happy and healthy family.
Continuing to tell myself this story cost me mental energy and kept me stuck. For example,
- I told others about my lack of visual skills whenever talking about my strengths. (I’m a words person, not an images person was a mental loop that I hadn’t tried to reprogram.)
- The story was taking up space in my brain that I could use for a better purpose such as a story that would move me forward. (I can teach myself Instagram just like I’ve taught myself other hard things.)
- Whenever I focused on Facebook or Pinterest for my business, a little voice said “but not Instagram. It’s going to take a lot of time to learn because I don’t see the world through images.”
- I was always on the lookout for training resources.
How I Wrote a Different Story
Last week a business coach confirmed my belief that I really should be on Instagram to grow my business. I’m passionate about my business so once she confirmed my thoughts, I decided I had to overcome my fear of failing (“Instagram is about images and I’m not a visual person.”)
I received an email selling training from an Insta guru at a significant discount. I purchased it, and found two other trainings I’d purchased months ago. I worked through two of the trainings just to the point that my profile would be would set up. Next, I spent some time investigating apps that create images and schedule posts. While doing that, I stumbled upon a membership website for stock photography for women business owners, bloggers and creative entrepreneurs.
This was a game changer! Someone else offered me a service that got me unstuck from the story that I was telling myself. Now I can choose beautiful images and focus on the words part, the part I love, and connect with people on Instagram.
I have a brand-new story to tell myself: I’m an Instagram beginner who can connect with busy moms looking for energy to live their purpose using beautiful images and inspirational words. And, I spend mental energy on learning and moving forward … instead of keeping myself stuck.
Which of the Stories You Tell Yourself Is Holding You Back?
The story doesn’t have to be a big one. It just needs to keep you stuck from a place you really want to be. Maybe you have limiting beliefs about your health & wellness. Maybe you think this season of life prevents you from reviving your physical, mental, or emotional energy. Can you get curious, open your mind, and gain new knowledge that will help you take control of the story you’re telling yourself that’s holding you back? Yes. Yes, you can.
